CHARACTERISTICS OF THE AREA

The Ripollès region is located in the eastern Pyrenees area, straddling the Cerdanya plain and the Empordà area where it borders the sea.

The region:

We could basically divide the area into two areas, the mid-mountain forested area that makes up the largest part of the region, between altitudes of 600m and 1700m, and the high mountain area that would range from altitudes of 1700m to 2900m, which we could say is the most favorable area for practicing free flying, both due to the ease of finding takeoffs and due to aerological conditions.

These two areas are, in stable meteorological conditions, under the regime of topographic or local breezes, that is, the insolation of the sun on the southeast, south and southwest slopes affects the relief and generates a regime of valley breezes following it in an ascending direction towards the high points. This dynamic, however, changes and adapts to changes in wind inputs and meteorological situations different from those mentioned, giving rise to effects that must be kept in mind for the practice of paragliding, on this website we mention the most frequent ones in order to minimize the risks.

One of the most important aspects to take into account in this area is the importance of the weather forecast on days of high instability, especially in summer and spring periods where the ability of the orography to generate clouds with great convective capacity is very high. It is not necessary to remember that being a basically mountainous region, the impact of one of these convective nuclei will affect practically the entire area of valleys and confluences that connect it, paying special attention to the development of clouds on days with these characteristics.

All these aspects are the result of a purely empirical observation and always with the intention of helping to interpret the day, they are NOT scientific observations and a good weather forecast and an interpretation of the day ahead will always prevail.
