Characteristics of the area.
The Ripollès region is located in the area of the eastern Pyrenees, straddling the Cerdanya plain and the Empordà area, where it borders the sea.
The area could be divided basically into two areas, the wooded area of mid-mountain that makes up the largest part of the region, between elevations of 600m and 1700m, and the high mountain area that would go from elevations of 1700m ma 2900m, which we could say is the most favorable area for the practice of free flight, both for the ease of finding flights and for weather conditions.
These two areas are, in conditions of stable meteorology, under the regime of topographic or local breezes, that is to say, the insolation of the sun in the slopes south-east, south and south-west affects the relief and generates a regime of breezes of valley following it in an ascending direction towards the high points. This dynamic, however, changes and adapts to changes in wind entrances and meteorological situations other than those mentioned, giving rise to effects that must be borne in mind for the practice of paragliding, in this website we mention the most common in order to minimize the risks.
One of the most important aspects to consider in this area is the importance of weather forecast on days of high instability, especially in summer and spring when the ability of the orography to generate clouds of high convective capacity is very high. . It is not necessary to remember that being a basically mountainous region, the affectation of one of these convective nuclei will affect practically all the zone of valleys and confluences that connect this one, paying special attention in the development of clouds in days with these characteristics.
All these aspects are the result of a purely empirical observation and always with the intention of helping the interpretation of the day, they are NOT scientific observations and a good weather forecast and an interpretation of the day ahead will always prevail.
